What is Dreadlocks?

Dreadlocks are a unique and versatile hairstyle that allows you to show off your personality and style. Adding color to your dreadlocks is a fun way to customize your look and make it more unique. However, dyed dreadlocks require special care to keep them looking vibrant and healthy. In this article, we’ll give you tips and tricks for maintaining and caring for dyed dreadlocks so you can keep your colored hair looking its best.

Things to Consider Before Dyeing Your Hair

In some cases, dyeing your hair can go badly if you don’t choose the right color for your hair type. If you are a newbie, you must have done your research on the best hair color for dark skin and the safest hair dye for hair strands. Before you start dyeing your hair, you must know the key things that you must consider. If you don’t know anything about it, don’t worry. Here are the things you must consider before you start dyeing your hair:

The Right Hair Dyeing Professional

First of all, you must know that dyeing your hair is a technical skill and not everyone can do it well at home. DIY is fun, but dyeing your hair is challenging. So, first of all, you must look for a professional hair dyer who can dye your hair strands like no one else. Leave this to a professional and trust him wholeheartedly. You will definitely spend some time looking for the right person to get this step done right the first time.

The Best Hair Dye Ingredients for Dreadlocks

No matter what your hair type is, it is essential to research the ingredients of the hair dye before dyeing your hair. If you want to dye your dreadlocks, make sure that the hair professional uses the best hair dye for dreadlocks and does not contain too many acidic chemicals. It is best to give priority to organic dyes. Also, no matter what you use, it is important to test the hair dye before using it.

Long-term care plan

Are you ready to make a long-term hair care plan? Generally, you should moisturize your dreads every three months or every season, but dyed hair at least once a month. In addition, moisturizing care includes protein treatment for the hair and scalp, especially if your dreads are blonde. So, be ready to take care of your blonde dreads to ensure your time and investment; otherwise, don't make a decision.

Budget plan

Dyeing your dreads is not a one-time thing. You need to invest a certain amount of time and money to maintain your dyed hair. For example, if you have gray hair, but you want to cover it up, you need to re-dye your hair after a period of time. This ensures that any gray hair on your scalp will continue to grow and you will have to cover them every time. If you have dyed your dreads with neon, blonde, brown, or any other hue, you need to refresh and re-dye to renew the color. This is necessary to keep the hair vibrant. In addition, you should also invest in regular hair care to keep your hair texture good. So, it is a long-term investment and when you decide to dye your dreadlocks, you must have a budget to support it.

How to color your hair without causing damage?

Divide your hair into 4 sections

Just like with loose hair, you need to divide your hair strands into four sections. If you have shorter hair strands (0-4), one Radiant Cream Color kit is enough to color all of your hair strands. However, for longer hair strands, I recommend using two kits because you need to saturate your hair strands to ensure a consistent color. In this tutorial, I chose the Trieste Red hue to warm up my dark hair.

Apply primer and color

After dividing your hair into four strands, go ahead and apply the included primer to the skin around your hairline. This will prevent the dye from staining your ears and hairline. After applying the primer, put on gloves and blend the hair dye. Unlike loose hair strands, you don't need to use a comb to evenly distribute the dye. You can use a dye brush if you prefer. You need to soak the hair strands in the dye, using the rubbing method to properly saturate thick hair. The dye needs to penetrate deeply into your hair, otherwise it will not work properly.

Wear a cap and wait

After dyeing your hair, leave the dye on your hair. Most hair care boxes will recommend leaving the dye on for 30-40 minutes. For tresses, I recommend leaving it on for 45-50 minutes. The dye will take longer to penetrate because of the tangles in your hair. While you are waiting for the dye to absorb, use the cleansing wipes (included) to remove any remaining dye from your hairline, hands, and skin around your ears, making sure not to remove the dye from your hair.

Wash the color out of your hair

Madison Reed will provide a great shampoo and conditioner to help you wash the color out of your hair. You will need to rinse your hair until the water runs clear - usually two rinses are necessary. For styled hair, I recommend using a deep oil conditioner to properly nourish your hair. You can apply coconut oil or Jamaican castor oil.

Re-twist your hair

After washing and conditioning your hair, go ahead and re-twist your hair to style it. Coloring your hair requires a lot of moisture and attention. Madison Reed hair dye is great because it doesn’t dry out your hair like many hair dyes do, but you still need to take extra steps to make sure your hair is properly moisturized every day to reduce breakage.

Benefits of Dyeing Your Hair

Dyeing your hair can make your hair look more lively, personal, and even unique. Whether you choose natural or synthetic dyes, there are many options to create the perfect color for your hair. For the best results with dyeing your hair, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully and consult a professional stylist to help you choose the right dye and get the look you want.

Tips and tricks for maintaining dyed braids

Maintaining dyed braids requires extra care to keep them looking vibrant and healthy.

Here are some tips to help you maintain your dyed braids:

Wash your hair with a sulfate-free shampoo designed for dyed hair. This will help protect your hair color and prevent fading.

Deep condition your hair regularly to keep it healthy and strong. Use a conditioner designed for dyed hair to help preserve your color.

Use warm water when washing your hair, as hot water can fade your braids.

Protect your hair from the sun by wearing a hat or scarf when you go outside. UV rays can damage your hair and cause the color to fade faster.

Avoid using harsh chemicals or heat styling tools on your hair, as they can cause damage and breakage.

Minimize damage when dyeing your hair

Dyeing your dreadlocks is a fun way to add color and personality to your look. However, it's important to take steps to minimize damage to your hair. Here are some tips to help you dye your dreadlocks without causing damage:

Use a dye specifically formulated for dreadlocks to minimize the risk of damage. These dyes are generally gentler and less likely to cause breakage.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully to ensure you're using the dye correctly.

Consider having a professional stylist dye your hair because they can ensure the dye is evenly applied and properly applied.

Don't dye your hair too often because this can damage your hair and cause breakage. Instead, dye your hair every 4-6 weeks or as needed.

Regularly deep conditioning your hair can help keep it healthy and strong.

How often should you wash your colored hair?

Washing your colored dreadlocks is important to keep them healthy and vibrant. However, be sure to avoid over-washing your hair because this can cause the color to fade faster. Here are some tips for washing your colored dreadlocks:

Wash your hair every 2-3 days or as needed. Don't over-wash your hair because this can cause the color to fade faster.

Use a sulfate-free shampoo designed for color-treated hair to help protect your hair color and prevent fading.

Use warm water when washing your hair, as hot water can fade your braids.

Use a color-protecting conditioner to help preserve your hair color and prevent fading.

Consider using dry shampoo between washes to help keep your hair looking clean and fresh.

Conclusion

Dyed dreadlocks are a unique and personal hairstyle that can add color and personality to your look. However, they require extra care to keep them looking vibrant and healthy. By following the tips and tricks in this article, you can maintain and care for your dyed dreadlocks, ensuring they stay in their best shape for as long as possible.
