What is a Twist Out?

Gather your curls and unlock the magic of twists for your natural hair. It’s the perfect look for transitioning, lengthening your hair, and changing up your natural hairstyle. Twists are the perfect natural hairstyle. It involves dividing your hair into sections, twisting the sections, letting them dry and style, and then untwisting the twisted sections to achieve gorgeous waves.

Most curly, wavy, and tight hair come with a variety of textures, and one of the best ways to unify them is with twists. There are seven (7) steps, including hair twist products, to help you achieve your best twists! No matter your hair texture, the foundation of any gorgeous look starts with your natural hair: clean, conditioned, and smooth hair. Let’s take a closer look at the steps to creating the perfect twist.

How to Do a Twist Out?

Here are the curling accessories and tools you need for perfect curls:

Natural Hair Claw Clips

Wide Tooth Combs

Spray Bottles

Hair Pins

Edge Tools

Step 1. Shampoo

Wash each strand thoroughly with PATTERN Moisturizing Shampoo. It’s a gentle yet effective cleanser that removes dirt and buildup without overdrawing your moisture account. Clean hair allows us to access lasting moisture, show our styles in their purest form, and more effectively accepts products, giving us the freedom to shape and redefine our styles.

Step 2. Clean and Detangle Your Hair

Condition, condition, condition. Choose from PATTERN’s Light, Medium, Heavy, or Intense Conditioners to lock in moisture and nutrients for super soft, more manageable hair. Each of our natural hair shampoos and conditioners are beneficial for a variety of textures, making detangling in the shower a breeze! Tangles slow you down. Detangle them with a PATTERN Wide Tooth Comb while conditioning and before styling.

Step 3. Protect Your Hair

To protect and replenish moisture, apply PATTERN Leave-In Conditioner to damp hair before styling. It detangles, tames frizz, slows moisture loss, and refreshes your hair, giving you a head start on creating defined styles before you style!

Step 4. Part Your Hair Four Ways

Separate hair into large, workable sections to keep them organized—this will help make styling quicker. Secure the sections you don’t want to work with clips or small buns. Within each section, twist the hair in sections, making each section approximately 1 inch.

Part the hair evenly, making sure each half is equal length from root to tip. If one half doesn’t reach the tip, this way you don’t have to “steal” a hair from the other half to complete the twist. Stealing hair can end up causing frizz.

Style hair with PATTERN’s Curl Gel or Strong Hold Gel for high definition results with flexible hold and tons of volume and shine. *Make sure every strand is coated with product for best results! When twisting, start near your scalp and use taut, even tension all the way to the ends. Repeat until your entire head is complete.

Keep PATTERN's spray bottle filled with water as you work to keep your hair texture moist. (If you have fine or low-density hair, consider using less product on slightly damp hair.)

Step 5. Allow Your Hair To Dry

Allow your curl pattern to dry completely before releasing your curls. Note: Any hint of moisture can awaken unwanted frizz. You can air dry your hair, or place it under a hooded dryer to activate the shine-enhancing ingredients.

Step 6. Take Your Twists Out

When it's time to release your curls, apply a few drops of PATTERN Jojoba Scalp Oil or Argan Oil Serum (with Castor Oil) to your hands and carefully untangle from ends to roots. Part and leave hair volumized to your heart's content. The hair serum provides your strands with extra nourishment, shine and protection, as well as curl definition. Use PATTERN's Hairspray to lift your roots and add volume. Let your curls flow freely and make room for gorgeous curls. If you're looking for extra nourishing curl care essentials, you can browse our range of low porosity hair care products.

Step 7. Create Your Twists

Finally, use PATTERN's Edge Control and Edge Tools to smooth out the edges and finish the look! Go bold. Go fly. Go dramatic. Check out our blog for other twist hairstyles like two-strand twists, Marley twists, flat twists, Havana twists, rope twists and more.

Conclusion

Twists are a great natural hairstyle that can be done using a variety of techniques. You can create tight curls, big ringlets, or even messy waves. The key is to start with freshly washed hair and apply oil or styling products to your twists regularly. After twisting your strands, let them sit and set for a while before untwisting them. When you untwist them, move slowly. Practice different twists and you'll be an expert in no time.

FAQ

Q1: Why do my curls get frizzy?

A: There are several reasons why curly hair gets frizzy. Usually, the main reason is that the curls were not dried properly. Moisture is a friend of curly hair, but in the case of curly hair, moisture can work against you. When you first untie it, it looks smooth, but as humidity and air take over, your hair may start to become frizzy. Another reason for frizz is that you don’t properly secure your curls before going to bed. The best way to sleep is to style your hair into a pineapple bun, tying your hair in a headband on top of your head. You can also do some large curls to keep your hair neat at night. Whatever hairstyle you choose, be sure to wear a hat to prevent friction while you sleep, which can also cause frizz.

Q2: How to make your curls last?

A: In addition to completely securing your hair while you sleep, use products to create a protective layer to protect against the elements. As mentioned above, applying a light oil to your curls every few days will help prolong the life of your curls. You can refresh your curls without completely redoing them by spraying water or Hair Milk Refreshing Spray on sections, applying curl cream, and re-curling. You’ll want to make sure your hair is completely dry before untangling, even if you’re only using the cream.

Q3: What do you use to curl your hair?

A: Curl cream will be a key product for your curls. Moisturizing formulas act as a moisturizer and primer to go with any gel or mousse, like Pracaxi Nectar Styling Foam, which you can combine with the cream to make it last longer. Once your style is set and you’re ready to take it off, apply a lightweight oil to each curl to further smooth it out and add shine. You can also reapply these shine-enhancing styling agents every few days to help reduce frizz and keep your curls in place longer.
