Creating Mini Twists for Protective Styling

Style your hair with protective styling as a gentle pampering. Your hair care regimen should change with the seasons, and it's also important to always switch up your hairstyle. 4C maintenance requires more moisture than other hair types to soften and strengthen strands. We wear different styles, like Afro, not only for fun, but also to help our natural hair. Most women with 4C hair benefit the most from protective styling because it also promotes hair growth. Some hairstyles are more popular at certain times of the year, but that doesn't mean others aren't. As long as you keep up with your hair essentials, you should be able to switch up your look, even in the winter!

The Concept of Protective Styling

Hair is fragile, and we often treat it by washing it and using various products, which makes it even more fragile. To complicate matters, the ends of the hair are the oldest and most fragile.

So when you wash, care for, style, and comb your hair regularly, you make it fragile by constantly pulling on it. For example, you like to wash your hair every week. It's a part of your daily routine.

Over time, you may notice that it's not growing longer. Your length remains the same, and you even see some breakage. This is where protective styling comes in.

This means braiding your hair - especially the ends - so that you don't need to touch it for a while. When you hide the ends, your hair is in protective styling.

How to Install the Twist Extensions?

I started by sectioning my hair into eight sections, four in the front and four in the back. I found it easier to start at the back of my head, although you can start at the front or around. I used the Marley Twist-Out Extensions, which come in a pack of 20 sections. I chose not to cut my hair in half because I have longer hair and wanted to make sure I covered the entire length. I also wanted a longer twist-out look.

I sectioned into small sections, between ¼” and ½” and attached the extensions using the braid-first method.

I started by creating a braid with my hair and two sections of the Marley Twist-Out Extensions.

Sandwiching my hair between the two sections of the braid, I wrapped my hair around the braid and back to the center to create a secure hold so I could continue braiding.

When I was about an inch down, I wrapped my hair around one braid, divided it into two sections, and began twisting the two strands of hair to the ends.

I repeated this process for a total of 160 twists, and 16 hours later I was done!

It's important to make sure you don't pull your hair too tight, especially around your hairline. You can separate your hair into larger sections, but try not to put too much pressure on delicate areas.

Styling Options for Bulk Curly Human Hair

Afro loose human hair offers endless styling possibilities. You can create a stunning look that highlights your natural texture.

Consider braids or twists for a chic, protective look. These options will not only elevate your look but also keep your hair healthy. Experiment with different sizes to find the one that works best for you.

For a bolder option, try an Afro bouffant or bun. This playful style showcases the fullness and beauty of African curly hair and makes a statement wherever you go.

Don’t forget the accessories! Headbands, scarves, and hair clips can add personality to any hairstyle while keeping it fresh and fun.

Try layering for added dimension. Layers help to evenly distribute the weight while enhancing the movement of your curls. Embrace the versatility of Afro loose human hair; let your creativity shine with every twist.

Things to Remember When Styling

You need to start with dry, clean, and smooth hair. If you put your hair in a bun while it’s wet, not only will you reverse the stretching, but it will also weaken your hair if it takes a long time to dry.

Your porosity will determine the best method for you, as there are women with different textures who can style wet hair.

As you work your magic, there are only three rules you need to always keep in mind when styling protective hair:

Don’t Style Too Tight

You need to make sure not to pull or pin your hair too tight to minimize tension on your hair.

Any soreness after styling is a sign to redo it ASAP!

Use Hair-Safe Tools

Any elastics with metal or rubber bands are bad. They are too tight and can easily pull our tresses.

Silicone ponytail clips are a great alternative, and you can even DIY them!

Use a natural bristle brush or fine-tooth comb through your hair (not through it, but to smooth out the surface).

Also check out adjustable cuff ponytail extensions, they’re awesome!

Natural Gel

The sleek look is in, but be sure to choose an organic product like aloe vera or flax seed gel to volumize your crown.

Gels can increase dryness, while natural gels will not. You can use an oil or butter of your choice (and a little spritz if needed) daily to maintain moisture and shine.

It’s totally fine to touch up with gel every day if needed. You can also wrap a satin scarf or silk hat around the bun and place your hair around it after styling and overnight.

After a few days, depending on the state of your hair, simply let your hair down to wash, moisturize, and repeat! If you’ve used extensions, you can keep your style longer as long as you keep it the way it was.

Conclusion

Although it is a long process, it is definitely worth it. If you had this style done at a braid shop, it would easily cost over $250, depending on the length and thickness of your hair. The benefit of braiding your own hair is that not only do you save a lot of money, but you can also update your style and do any maintenance if needed. Twists are a great protective hairstyle for any occasion, and I have received many compliments on them. They match my own hair well and can last four to six weeks.
