5 Hair Care Tips: How to Care for Your Human Hair Wigs

Wigs can be a big part of your everyday life, therefore the care that goes into them matters. Just like any delicate item, a wig can easily get damaged, so you need to look after your wig, just as you would look after your own, biological hair. If you’re looking to maintain your wigs initial volume and bounce, consider treating it correctly. Here are our 5 top tips when it comes to caring for your human hair wig.

Keep it Clean

It is recommended to wash and condition every 6-8 wears.  Since human hair needs extra moisture, it's best to use a deep conditioner every other wash.  It’s important to only apply conditioner from mid-shaft to ends.  Always avoid using conditioner on the base or lid as this can affect integrity and cause shedding.  When using deep conditioners or treatments, use products made for color-treated human hair and follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Washing your human hair wig

Never soak/submerge your wig. Rinse by holding under cool running water, allowing it to run from roots to ends.

Get a small amount of shampoo formulated for color-treated hair on your hand and gently, evenly stroke it through your wig, starting at the roots and moving to the ends.

Rinse under cool, running water until the water runs clear. Gently squeeze to remove excess water- never twist/wring your wig.

Use the right products

Using the correct wig care products on your human hair wig is crucial to keeping your wig thick and lush.  Regular shampoos and conditioners contain a lot of chemicals that can damage your wig and should be avoided.  Keep your wig smooth and protected by using the best wig shampoo and conditioner for your wig's overall health.

Avoid the Heating

Just like you do with your natural hair, it's important to keep heat styling of your wig to a minimum.  Blow dryers, curling irons, and straighteners can cause serious damage to hair by drying it out and breaking strands.  You can certainly use these tools from time to time, but be sure to use a heat protectant on your human wig before styling.  An electric curling iron with a low or medium setting is a great way to achieve soft curls without using too much heat.

Store your Wig Correctly

It is important to store your wig correctly when you are not using it.  Be sure to keep it out of direct sunlight, otherwise the hair color will fade quickly and dry out.  A wig stand is helpful, but not necessary.  It can help the wig cap maintain its shape, but it can also be difficult to find a place in your home.  When purchasing a wig, please keep the original packaging.  You can always use it to store your wig properly.  If you've already thrown it away, you can use a shoebox lined with tissue paper, an airtight plastic container, or a resealable plastic bag.  Make sure to take off your wig before going to bed, as wigs can easily become tangled and damaged.  It also should not be worn while swimming or bathing.  Always comb your wig before storing it to keep it fresh and tangle-free.  Place them in a cool, dry place, such as a wardrobe, and make sure they are completely dry before storing.

Human Hair Wig caring FAQs

Can regular shampoo be used on real hair wigs?

It's generally okay to use regular shampoo on human hair wigs, but experts recommend using products specifically designed for dyed hair.  Keep in mind that human hair wigs are chemically treated and do not naturally moisturize like natural hair.  Don't use clarifying shampoo as this can strip oil and other buildup from your hair, causing dryness.

Can human hair wigs be washed in hot water?

When cleaning the wig, it is best to use cold water rather than hot water.  Ideally, warm water is best because it's cool enough to protect your hair but warm enough to rinse out any products that have been used without causing damage to your hair.

Which oil is best for human hair wigs?

Human hair ends like adding moisture and oil or essence.  The ends of human hair are the most vulnerable to damage, so oil needs to be added to take care of them.  If you stick to a salon-grade or high-end moisturizer, you should see great results.  Argon oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, and olive oil are the most commonly used and are ideal for human hair wigs.  When choosing a moisturizing hair oil or cream, pay attention to these ingredients.  As with conditioner, avoid putting it at the roots or base of your wig.
