We'll show you how to create basic cornrows, then give you some styling ideas that'll have you turning heads wherever you go.

What is the History of Cornrows?

Cornrows are a traditional African hairstyle that has become a global trend. This intricate design involves braiding hair close to the scalp, creating a neat and stylish look. For girls or children with thin or short hair, you can still easily achieve your desired hairstyle using various types of human hair braids. I love providing a brief history of each hairstyle, so here goes.
Cornrows originated in Africa, in the 3000 B.C. Cornrows were first introduced to the Western world by enslaved Africans. African slaves often resorted to cornrows because they were low-maintenance and could keep their natural hair protected for several weeks. In some instances, cornrows were used to act as small acts of resistance and rebellion and were ways of discreetly communicating with each other.

Today, various celebrities, including Alicia Keys and Beyonce, have embraced cornrows. For instance, Beyonce introduced us to lemonade braids in her 2016 album, where she rocked this hairstyle. Alicia Keys’ braids are also trending, which I will touch on in one section. Cornrows are a great way of protecting our hair.
Cornrows hold great cultural significance for black women and men. They have been an integral part of African cultural heritage for centuries, representing identity, tradition, and art. Through cornrows, people can express their creativity while embracing the important cultural beauty of their hair.
In addition to cultural significance, cornrows human hair braid offer many advantages to black women and men. From cultural heritage to low-maintenance nature, protectiveness, and styling versatility, cornrows continue to be cherished and popular around the world.

How to braid cornrows for beginners

The easiest way to braid cornrows is to wet your hair and then separate the front section. Take a small section of hair from this section and separate it into three strands. Twist the hair twice as you would a normal braid, then join the hair under the braid to the middle strand.
Basic cornrow braiding tips.

Step 1:

Wash and detangle your hair. Wash your hair with a regular shampoo and conditioner. While your hair is still damp, use a leave-in conditioner and a detangling brush. Then apply a hair oil or pomade to lock in moisture. Braiding your hair is much easier when it is damp and tangle-free. Some oils or pomades you can use to keep your hair moisturized and tangle-free include coconut oil, argan oil, jojoba oil, shea butter, or aloe vera products. If your natural hair is very tightly curled, blow-dry your hair before you begin braiding. This will help to elongate your curls and make your cornrows look neater.

Step 2:

Separate your hair into several rows from front to back. Use the end of a pointed-tail comb to separate the hair into rows from the forehead to the nape of the neck. Start by parting the hair in the middle and work from the center of the forehead to the nape of the neck, then divide each side section into 1-3 more rows. More sections will make your cornrows smaller. Secure each row of hair in place with a small-toothed clip or bobby pin.
If you don't want a center section, divide it into two sections near the center, do one row on the top of the head, and then do more rows on the sides from there. Space the sections evenly so that each row of hair is roughly the same size.

Step 3:

Divide the first row into 3 even sections. Untie the center section and hold the hair near the forehead with your fingers. Use your fingers to separate this row of hair into 3 even sections: left section, center section, and right section. Do this with both hands, holding section 1 in one hand and section 2 in the other. Before you begin braiding, apply a little edge-control gel along your hairline. This will help you hold the hair more easily, smooth out stray hairs, and keep the cornrows neat.

Step 4:

Begin to braid the 3-strand braid. Use your fingers to swap the center and right-most strands, placing the right strand under the center strand. Then, swap the left strand and the new center strand. Repeat this process, alternating the center strand with the right and left strands. [4]
As you swap the strands, either the left or right strand will become the new center strand.
Each time you complete the braid with all 3 strands, it is called a "braid stitch."

Step 5:

Take a small section of hair from the strand to add to each braid stitch. Repeat the braid stitch technique above, adding 1⁄2 inch (1.3 cm) of hair to each stitch. Each time you make a new braid stitch, add more hair from the same strand, gathering up any loose hair underneath the braid and merging it with one of the strands. Continue until you reach the nape of your neck.
If you don't add more hair to each stitch (essentially creating a small French braid), the braid will pull away from your head instead of lying flat in a cornrow style.

Step 6:

Once the micro braid is free of your scalp, finish it off and secure it with a hair tie. When you reach your neck, you will have no more hair to add to each stitch. Simply finish the braid until you have used up all the remaining hair. Then secure the end of the braid with an elastic, rubber band, or small hairpin. The length of the end of the braid will depend on the length of your hair.

FAQ

How much hair do I need for cornrows?

At least 3 inches is ideal. Cornrows are easiest with 12-20 inches of hair.

How to French braid step by step?

Begin by separating a small section of hair from where you want to braid and then divide it into three sections. Braid as you would a three-strand braid, but each time you cross the outer hair to the middle, add some extra hair from that side. Continue braiding until there is no hair left to join, then braid the ends of the hair.

Will cornrows be popular?

Short answer: Yes. Long story short: Cornrows are deeply rooted in African history; they have only gotten better over time as various variations have emerged over the years. They are a symbol of resilience, strength, and unity. They are not just a hairstyle but a way to celebrate our rich heritage. Therefore, you can expect cornrows to continue to be popular in the coming years. The only difference will be that there will be newer trends and various cornrows variations. Cornrows do not require much effort and look beautiful. You can expect them to be popular for a long time.

Conclusion

Cornrows are timeless braided hairstyles that can express one’s creativity and personality. These hairstyles offer endless possibilities for self-expression. You can add different variations or styles including tribal designs, geometric patterns, cornrow extensions, curly extensions, or braids. Remember this: our hair is our crown and we should wear it with pride.
