The Comprehensive Guide to Braiding with Bulk Curly Human Hair

Micro braids, mini braids, freestyle braids, personal braids, box braids, tree braids, hook braids, goddess braids - there are so many different ways to braid your hair that it's hard to count them all. While not all braiding methods require the same type of hair, braiding requires a quick, steady hand and a secure hair. So for any woman who has ever considered braiding her own hair, getting a sew-in wig, or thinking about learning how to braid someone else's hair, some delicate hands are needed.

Best human hair braids

Because you're using human hair braids, your braids are going to fall more naturally and look more seamless. Oftentimes with synthetic braid hair, the braids can have a shiny, almost plastic-like look and stiffness. For my style, I used straight Starlet brand bulk braiding hair. You can use a wavy or curlier texture hair depending on the look or style you're going for.
Styling my braids was so much easier with human hair. Also, styling braids with human hair is so much easier. Putting my hair up with regular braids is usually not a great option because of the stiffness and the tension on my edges. With human hair, putting my hair up felt like just putting up my own hair.

The Appeal of Human Hair for Braiding

Human hair is a top choice for weaving because it looks and feels natural. Unlike human hair, it can withstand heat styling and washing, which helps to extend its longevity and reusability. Human hair is versatile and allows you to braid your hair into simple braids or intricate braids. This way, you can really make your look your own.

Remy Human Hair

Remy hair is one of the most premium options, known for having its cuticle intact and aligned in one direction. This alignment helps prevent tangles and ensures hair remains smooth and manageable.

Virgin Human Hair

Virgin hair is completely unprocessed and not chemically treated. It is considered the purest form of hair, offering durability and natural shine.

How to do twists with bulk curly human hair?

The key to creating neat and perfect twists with braided extensions is to securely attach an even amount of braided hair to each small section and maintain consistent tension while braiding.

Section your hair

Divide your natural hair into even small sections.

Prepare your braided hair

Cut your braided hair to the desired length and divide it into even small sections. The amount of braided hair you use should match the thickness of the section of your natural hair you are twisting.

Apply twist gel to your natural hair

Attach the braided hair

Take a strand of your natural hair and place the braided hair at the root of your hair. You can braid it a few times to secure it or start twisting right away, depending on your preference.

Twist: Divide your natural hair and braided hair

Twist the two strands of hair against each other, making sure to maintain consistent tension. This allows your curls to be a little tighter for security while still feeling comfortable on your scalp.

Continue twisting

Repeat the twisting process until all twists are completed.

Maintenance and Finishing

Once you have completed all your twists, seal the ends in the same way you would do mini twists on your natural hair. Moisten your curls with a light oil and style as desired. You can also cover your curls with a satin or silk scarf to help the oil absorb better.

Do mini twists use hair crochet hair help hair grow?

As many hairstylists and influencers have demonstrated on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, mini twists can be great for keeping hair growing, just like other protective braid styles. But don't go overboard with the twists—these styles don't actually speed up hair growth. Board-certified dermatologist and licensed cosmetologist Yolanda Lenzy explains that while styling alone won't make your hair grow faster, keeping your hair in a protective style can help prevent breakage and create the proper conditions for healthy growth. This means that properly caring for your scalp and twists is essential to promoting hair growth when wearing mini twists.

Do Mini Twists Cause Breakage?

When done correctly, mini twists don't typically cause breakage. In fact, they're often used as a protective style that helps prevent breakage by tucking the hair away and reducing the need for daily manipulation. However, mini twists can cause breakage if they're done too tightly, left in too long, or if the hair isn't properly moisturized before and during styling. Being gentle, staying hydrated, and avoiding too much pressure on your scalp during installation will help keep your hair healthy while wearing mini twists.

How to wash, care and maintain your twists to prevent frizz?

Properly washing, caring and maintaining your twists is key to preventing frizz and unraveling.
Twists should generally be washed every 1 to 2 weeks to keep them clean and your scalp healthy. However, the exact frequency depends on your hair type, lifestyle, and how your scalp responds to your twists.
If you have a dry scalp, we recommend extending the wash interval to every 2 weeks. Use a water-based moisturizer to keep your mini twists moisturized.

Gentle wash

Dilute shampoo: Use a sulfate-free shampoo and dilute it with water to reduce irritation. Use the applicator bottle to apply directly to your scalp.
Scalp care: Use your fingertips to gently massage your scalp to cleanse your scalp but don't disturb your curls. Avoid excessive scrubbing or pulling.
Rinse carefully: Let the water run down your curls to rinse the shampoo out, ensuring minimal friction. Avoid piling your curls on top of your head while washing.

Deep Conditioning

Conditioning and Moisturizing: Apply a lightweight conditioner or leave-in conditioner, focusing on the scalp and lengths of the curls. Avoid heavy products that can cause buildup.
Steam or Cap: Use a plastic cap or sit under a steamer to help conditioner penetrate the hair. This will add moisture without untangling the hair conchet hair.

Drying

Air Drying: Gently squeeze out excess water with a microfiber towel or t-shirt. Allow the curls to air dry as much as possible.
Cool: If you need to speed up the drying process, use a hooded dryer on a low setting to avoid frizz.

Moisturizing Routine

Daily Moisturizing: Keep your afro kinky bulk hair moisturized with a water-based leave-in conditioner or moisturizing spray. Then use a lightweight oil or cream to lock in moisture.
Avoid Heavy Products: Stick to lightweight products to prevent buildup and keep your curls looking fresh.
Moisturizing Scalp: It is important to moisturize your hair and scalp during this time. Spray a hair mist two to three times a week and use a hair oil to lock in moisture.

Protect your bun: Wear a satin or silk scarf or hat at night to protect your bun from friction and keep it in place.
Pineapple Protection: You can also tie your bun into a loose high ponytail (the "pineapple" method) to reduce frizz and maintain the style.

Human hair braids are popular choice for braiding for black women due to its versatility and natural look. While the installation process can be time-consuming and may add tension to the hair, proper technique and maintenance can alleviate these issues.
